Signs Your Dog Is Guarding You – If You See These, You Got A Protector

Having a dog at your side may feel like having a private bodyguard. Canines are much more protective of their owners and loved ones than any other animals we keep as pets.

But sometimes, some dogs are simply scared of something and reacting to it, and you will misunderstand it as him protecting you. So today, we will check out some signs indicating that your four-legged friend is protective of you.

So, what are the signs your dog is guarding you? Sleeping next to you, always being on alert when you are with the dog, trying to drag you away from danger, staring at people or objects that your pet finds suspicious, and walking ahead of you while on a walk are only a handful of these signs your dog is guarding you.

Having a canine that is protective of you by your side will naturally give us a feeling of protection and security and make us feel at ease knowing that we are fully protected.

But we might get this uneasy feeling about whether our pet will really save us from real danger. And knowing the signs of a faithful guard dog will help you eliminate this seedling of doubt.

And keep in mind that dogs protect things closer and more valuable to them. Some of these include his toys, food, chewie toys, and you. So without further ado, let’s check out some of the signs your pet is trying to keep you safe.

The Signs Your Dog Is Guarding You

  • Will not let others touch your valuables

When a dog is protecting his owner, he knows all the things that you own. So when a stranger tries to touch or steal anything, the pet will spring into action and protect your possessions.

It is similar to how a dog guards his toys, dog bed, and other things he owns from people around.

  • Always be on alert when you are near him

An alert dog has features such as erect ears, keeping an eye on suspicious-looking things, steady and ready movements, rigid body features, etc., so when your dog starts to be on guard when you are near him, you know exactly what to look out for.

When a pet goes into alert mode, he’s concentrating on everything around to keep an eye out for anything that could cause you harm.

If he feels like it’s not secure enough for you, he will get into action and try to move you away. So pay attention to what the dog is trying to tell you all the time.

  • Will growl, snare, bark, and lunge at any stranger

The easiest method to identify a protective guard dog is by how he behaves around strangers when you are involved. Does he let anyone come to you, hug you and touch you? Or does he only allow people he approves to be near you?

If the dog will not hesitate to let out his wrath when any person that is strange to him comes near you, be prepared to accept the fact that you’ve got yourself a guard dog.

  • Sits between your legs

Try to remember. What does your pet do when you two are walking outside, and you stop quickly to do something? Or is hanging out with a bunch of friends at home?

Does your pup come and sit down between your legs? Or does he just ignore the fact you have stopped in the middle of the walk and carry on with whatever he’s doing?

If your doggo comes and sits between your legs, take note, he’s on the lookout. The pet is telling everybody around that you belong to him and not anybody else.

  • Check on you when you are asleep

You and many other dog owners might be oblivious to the fact that your protective dog is on the lookout for any danger, even when you are tight asleep in the dead of night.

He will come near you, whiff at you, and check if you are sleeping perfectly or if something has happened to you.

When he’s satisfied that you are still sleeping and nothing has happened to you, the doggo will return to his usual sleeping place and get on with the rest of the night.

Other than these facts, there are some more common signs your dog is guarding you. Let me quickly point them down below.

  • He always stays near you
  • Sleeps wherever you sleep
  • Run around you
  • Bark when someone else sits near you
  • Stares at anyone or anything if they look suspicious
  • His body gets tense when a stranger is around you or when going outside

We also put together a long list of the most protective dog breeds that constantly guard their loved ones, especially the owners, whenever possible.

If you are searching for a great guard dog, take notes, these are the best breeds for that.

  • German Shepherd
  • Boxer
  • Australian Shepherd
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • Rottweiler
  • Bull Terrier
  • Beauceron
  • American Staffordshire terrier
  • Giant schnauzer
  • Belgian Malinois
  • Chesapeake Bay retriever
  • Cane Corso

  • Rhodesian ridgeback
  • Bullmastiff

If you already own one of the dog breeds we have mentioned above, you must already have a great doggo friend who’s great at watching out for you and keeping your entire family safe and out of danger.

These dogs are also great with small kids and will protect the owners and loved ones with their lives.

And even if you are looking to bring an excellent guard dog home, you can pick one of the above without a second thought.

Training is vital for these guard dogs, and so is socialisation so that they know when to spring into action and when not to.

These are the signs your dog is guarding you, and if you ever notice any of these signs, it’s high time you accept you’ve got a protective dog for yourself.

With the signs your dog is guarding you, as we have mentioned above, understanding your dog’s motives when he barks or growls at someone will also be easy.

So whenever he barks at a stranger, you are not to be offended, knowing he’s just doing his job.
