Why Are Jack Russell Terriers So Expensive? Answers Explained

Why Are Jack Russell Terriers So Expensive? Answers Explained

Most potential JRT owners ask us, ‘Why are Jack Russell Terriers so expensive?’. Everything has a price, and the price depends on the value. Therefore, I thought to discuss the factors affecting Jack Russell’s selling price.

So, why are Jack Russell Terriers so expensive? The truth is that Jack Russells are not much expensive compared to other expensive dog breeds. They are in the middle, compared to the other terrier dogs. Typically, the price of a purebred JRT puppy would be around $600 – $900, which is a little bit higher than other Terrier breeds. And also, you will have to spend some money on training and other necessary supplements.

I will discuss the JRT’s price, the reasons for their higher price, other expensive dog breeds in the market, and some tips to find a JRT for a reasonable price in detail through this article. Stay tuned.

How much do Jack Russell Terriers cost?

This is a common question when you consider buying anything. When it comes to Jack Russells, the price may vary depending on some important facts.

  • Age
  • Height and weight
  • Health
  • Gender
  • Bloodline
  • Parent’s health and appearance
  • Parent’s achievements

It means if you adopt a Terrier from a reputable local rescue center, it can cost around $300 – $500. And a purebred (Full-bred) Jack Russell Terrier may vary between $800-$2500 depending on the facts I mentioned earlier.

Undoubtedly you will see a wide gap between the prices. Now you have the exact question,” why are JRTs so expensive, and what is the reason for the price gap?”

Why are Jack Russell Terriers so expensive?

As I mentioned earlier, Jack Russell Terriers have some special qualities which other Terrier breeds haven’t. That makes them a little bit more expensive than other dogs.

Everything has a value, and that value has a cost. So, let’s see the unique values that JRTs have more than other dog breeds.

  • Jack Russell Terriers are an all-in-one solution for petting and safety
  • They are hyperactive dogs
  • JRTs have a relatively longer lifespan
  • They are loveable and affectionate dogs
  • Jacks are good guard dogs
  • They are playful and energetic dogs despite their small size
  • JRTs are one of the most intelligent dogs in the world
  • Jack Russells have won thousand of dog championships
  • They are fast runners and high jumpers
  • JRTs are easy to maintain
  • Jacks can learn tricks relatively faster than other Terrier dogs
  • They are friendly companions

Why is there a price difference between Pet-rescue centers and dog breeders?

The main difference relies on where you find your hyper dog to adopt. Normally local rescue Jack Russell terriers cost less compared to original breeders.

You know local rescues and original breeders have a difference in the cost. Simply, you may think it is easy to adopt a Jack Russell Terrier from a local breed.

But my advice is to adopt a Jack Russell terrier puppy from a breeder. There are some reasons behind it.

  • You can meet their parents
  • Guarantee on Bloodlines
  • Behavior and temperament – They will be socialized well and can be around other pets.
  • You have the chance to mold the behavior of a Jack Russell terrier according to your choice.
  • Better Discipline
  • Documentation – You don’t need to work on the necessary documents because they keep all the records from birth.
  • Records of parents
  • Immunizations
  • Microchipping
  • Health guarantees
  • Support – They will give you instructions even after the puppy is taken away.
  • Vaccinations

Jack Russell’s price compared with most expensive dogs

It is obvious that the popularity of dog breeds is being changed day-to-day with the personal tastes of dog lovers.

And you may hear that recently a Tibetan Mastiff with a lion’s bloodline was sold as the most expensive dog in China in 2014.

However, it seems the bestselling dogs have been mostly mixed breed dogs during the past few years. I guess this is because people tend to love combinations of dogs rather than finding purebred dogs.

When you find out the 30 most expensive dog breeds globally, Jack Russell Terriers have taken seventh place. Here is the list,

  1. Akita
  2. Portuguese water dog
  3. Coton de Tulear
  4. Miniature pinscher
  5. Shetland sheepdog
  6. Peekapoo
  7. Jack Russell Terriers

Buying a Jack Russell Terrier or Rescue?

When you think about adopting a Jack Russell terrier, you can either buy a dog from a breeder or rescue it from an organization.

There are so many dog rescue groups to help if you want to rescue. But as they need more exercises and activities, you need to provide those and handle them with care.

And, you might need to try socializing with these dogs because if not, they can be aggressive towards the other animals. You can adopt them from public animal shelters and humane societies.

And on the other hand, when it comes to buying from a breeder, there are two types. They are ”show breeders” who care about appearance and the ”performance breeders” who focus more on energetic temperament.

Performance breeders practice their dogs in dog agility, rally obedience, musical freestyle, flyball, frisbee, and dog events.

Moreover, there are mixtures of these two as well as the people who just breed dogs. But you need to consider more on how you will buy a pet.

You need to consider two important certificates when you buy a puppy from a breeder. Those are,

A certificate from the canine eye registry foundation (CERF) – dog to be free from eye diseases

A certificate from the Orthopedic Foundation of America certifies dogs to have normal knees (OFA).

So far, I continued the article on the question,” why are Jack Russells so expensive?” and we have come to an end.

As I discussed above, these dogs are not so expensive. Still, there are some special concerns about buying a Jack Russell Terrier.

Good Luck with finding your four-legged companion. Stay tuned with Jack Russell Owner for more interesting posts about your favorite dog breed.
